This happened thanks to the changing water management along several canals in Utrecht. In the past, the basements were intended as storage or as a transit space for goods. These could easily be removed and fed along the water. The space could be reached from the building above, which is at street level. The basements and bridges formed a city port in the Middle Ages. Nowadays, the yard cellars contain companies, shops and catering establishments. The shops and restaurants have a pleasant ambience due to the beautiful waterfront location.
