The beautiful Bergkerk is located in the centre of Deventer and has a long history. Nowadays you can admire exhibitions and concerts.
The Bergkerk is also called the St. Nicholas Church. Originally a Romanesque cross basilica, the church was built in the years 1198-1209 and was founded in the heyday of the Hanseatic city by Norbertines. The church was dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of the skippers. In the 15th century, the church was renovated and acquired a late Gothic character. This can be seen from the characteristic spires. In 1580 the church came into the hands of the Protestants and all Catholic characteristics disappeared. Later many old paintings were uncovered and the building came into the hands of the municipality of Deventer. Today, the church is used for exhibitions, meetings and concerts.
