This is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. Be amazed by 4000 different plants from all over the world.
Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and unwind in the Hortus. You will find this beautiful botanical garden right in the center of the city. Stroll through warm, dense greenhouses, discover blooming water lilies and seek the shade under a centuries-old tree. Originally, the Hortus was a medicinal herb garden, founded in 1638 by the Amsterdam City Council. In the period after a plague epidemic, this was vital. Thanks to the trade of the VOC, the Hortus expanded rapidly in the 17th and 18th centuries. During that period, the garden filled with exotic ornamental plants. A few 'crown jewels' that you can still see there are from that time.
