Open the big door on the Spui and step into this special, hidden courtyard. Enjoy the tranquillity of this beautiful, historic city centre spot.
The Begijnhof is the only court that can be found in medieval Amsterdam. The courtyard is almost a meter lower than the rest of the city centre, on the medieval street level. The Begijnhof is no ordinary courtyard. It did not serve as an old age facility but as a kind of monastery. In the courtyard you will find a chapel and shelter church. The houses you see in the courtyard mainly have facades from the 17th and 18th centuries. Known is the restored Houten Huys at number 34. This is one of the few preserved medieval wooden houses and dates back to around 1528. Another tip: be quiet during a visit. The Begijnhof is a Hof of silence.
