ARTIS was founded in 1838 with the aim of promoting the knowledge of Natural History. The first collection consisted of no more than a few parrots, monkeys and a Surinamese forest cat. This changed when a year later a large collection of animals was taken over from C. van Aken. In one fell swoop, ARTIS became a real zoo with an elephant, numerous predators and a large boa constrictor. Today, ARTIS is a place where many species live between each other, you can spot giraffes and zebras on the Savannah, and you can be surrounded by a countless number of butterflies in the Butterfly Pavilion. Admire beautiful tropical fish and centuries-old trees and plants. Experience nature and discover what it means for our society. Because more awareness of nature creates more respect for everything that lives.
