Originally, the guesthouse was against the city wall. This is because it used to serve as a pesthouse. Nowadays, it's a peaceful place in the city.
The guesthouse was founded in 1517. After having fulfilled the function of pesthuis for a while, it also served a time as a madhouse. A shelter for the mentally ill. Part of the income was acquired by the guesthouse by letting Groningers look at the 'lunatics' or 'joking' on Sundays. Today there are houses available in the complex.
