Located on the beautiful Hofvijver, you'll visit Rijksmuseum de Gevangenpoort. Experience the exciting stories of crime and punishment in times past. In the 15th century, the 'Voorpoort van den Hove' became a prison. Defaulters were imprisoned there and suspected criminals awaited trial. A century later, the gate expanded to include the gajols (cells) and the courthouse. The gaols, where suspects were imprisoned, were cold and chilly. Since 1882, the prison has been transformed into a museum and visitors discover what it used to be like to be locked up.
