This imposing fortress has a long history and is therefore worth a visit and is also a relaxing place to stroll around.
The Citadel is a former fortress built between 1637 and 1645 and was named Fort Willem Maria, after Frederick Henry of Orange had conquered the city from the Spaniards. The fort had two functions. For example, it had to defend the city against possible attacks by the Spaniards and at the same time it had to keep an eye on the inhabitants of Bossche, because they feared that the inhabitants would remain faithful to the Spanish king. The fort has an extensive historical story which is interesting to know when you visit the Citadel.
